broken speedo gear - damage to t-case?

Hey Guys,

The speedo gear that connects into the BW 1345 t-case in my 86 302/AOD combo has one or two teeth missing. It looks and feels like it's made out of steel, not plastic like some of the different colored ones I've seen sold on the internet.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but will it hurt anything if I leave it in the t-case like that? My brother in law (mechanic) claims it shouldn't, that it would only be a problem on the newer electronic transmissions, but I wanted to verify that with y'all.

Where can I get a replacement? Dealer? I checked ford-parts.com and a few other online part sources, but couldn't find an OE replacement for it. All I found are the colorful plastic ones offered at some of the high performance transmission websites, but I'm not really sure if those are direct replacements for my stock t-case.

Thanks for any extra info.
