Got my duals run yesterday. It sounds pretty good fairly loud. It has a definately more aggressive tone.I was told that after the muffler "breaks in" it will sound better (louder).I did notice today that it was a few decibles louder that it was yesterday, I still have not driven far enough to burn all the paint off the muffler. The guy that I had install the pipes had not done an exhaust on the ford V10 before and he was very impressed with the tone! I stopped to talk with some friends tonight and we noticed that the sound was louder on the passenger side of the truck probably because that pipe is about two feet shorter that the drivers side pipe and it flow faster. They were also very impressed. The sound won't stop traffic but it will turn some heads! I also noticed an improved throttle response. Its hard to rev it up and stay within the acceptable speed limit when it gets up and goes. I have to pull my trailer tommorow and it will be interesting to hear what it sounds like under a load!
Sorry to keep everyone waiting, benn busy with work.
Well, I am glad I tokk the advice to start early. I took 11 full hours.
My buddy and I thought that we could save time by not removing the inner fender wells; looking back iwished we would have done so.
The removal of the stock manifolds and wye pipe went real well, until the front-half of the passengers side. Three broken studs. was not fun and added an about three hours to the install. Believe me, there is nothing you can do to prevent the studs from breaking. I was fortunate to have a "Blue Point" 'easy out' kit, witch allows you to spin in either direction.
Back to the Thorley headers: They fit like a glove! But, the directions are misleading and not at all detailed. The directions instruct you to install the drivers side header first, it would actually be ALOT easier to install the passenger side first. This is because of the slip-fit connector pipe from the pass. side to the drive side.
These headers are promoted by Thorley to produce more tourque; and they deliver. The truck just seem to breeze up extended grades with no sweat at all.
I will post more observations and pictures soon.
I would recommend these headers to anyone who is looking to improve his towing/hauling performance.
hey smokin superduty. congrats on the install. just wondering what year yours is and did they have an egr hookup? was there o2 holes in the y pipe? thanks for your time.
smoken, did it change the sound much and has anybody had any sugestions for not breaking the studs? What if I put heat to the nut just before trying to loosen it?
The nuts have been crimped so they "lock" on the studs. When I did my header install 1/2 came off the studs and the rest stuck and the stud came out with the nut on it. I wonder if you use a small socket on the stud end and then tried to remove the nut if there would be less breakage.
