So today I finally got tired of my stock exhaust and dont have the money to have duals put on. Si I go outside get the hack saw and cut off the muffler. I start the engine up and it has a real low deep rumble but its still quiet! If I took some pipe and ran it out the back bumper corners with 3.5 in tips would it be louder or what do I need to do? I want it to sound good and be loud.
that wouldnt sound very good, it would sound too much like an import. Im not sure what kind of emmisions laws you have, but I would just remove the second cat and let it be.
i've got a straight pipe into a 30" glasspack...rumbles some, but not really loud...gonna go w/ true dual 24" packs or flows down the road...after i build my other engine, get my tranny i want, front/rear ends, etc, etc, etc....
I have a 94 F150 and i put a cherrybomb on to replace my muffler. BAD idea!!!! My truck now sounds like a honda civic! the only way to make a 4.9 loud is to totaly remove both cats and replace them with a single high flow, or no cats at all. but in doing this requires the replacement of th y-pipe. thats because the first cat pipes go all the way up to the manifolds. its complicated to explain but if you go to your local muffler shop they could explain it better than I. It will cost me about $500 just for a new y-pipe. so is what im saying is all your sound is lost in those 2 restrickive cats. take care of them and you'll be alot louder.
i have one cat (first) and about 2' of pipe after that. let me tell u, its loud as heck and sounds pretty good. it has some weird resonance and an odd tone due to the resonance of the exhaust exiting under the body but other then that, it sounds really mean and loud. when ur on it hard, look out cuz it sounds mean as hell. some people say it sounds like a ricer but my personal experience is its not to bad and has more of a tractor on steroids sound.
my plan is to run a 45 degree bend off that 2' of pipe into a 3 1/2" x 22" echo tip until i can afford a true exhaust system comin out the back from a y after the first cat and exiting before the bumper with those same tips. i heard thats one of the best set ups for a 300.
Hey I just put on my exhaust Ive got both stock cats still running into a long thrush glass pack(cherry bomb) then out in front of back axle with turn down. It is deep and has a rumble but isnt loud sounds identical to my friends 351M with same set up. Cats are comin off 2morrow any other suggestions?
Glasspacks and the 300 don't mix...period! They sound like booty on anything with less than 400 cubic inches. :just finished ranting: A hint is that Flow 40s sound pretty good with dual tips out the back.
I put a 2 chamber 40 series Flowmaster on mine. There's a short piece of pipe from the cat to the muffler, then a 45 on the muffler and another short piece of pipe out the side. It exits in front of the rear tire. It sounds NASTY!!!! It's got a good bark to it.
Strieght piped, no cats(its a '67) sounds good, distinct rummble. No ware near as loud as a ch*vy 350 w/strieght pipes. At high rpm's it looses its rummble and sounds a little like a lawnmower.
basically decided what i want for my exhaust when i'm done...
true dual 2 1/4" straight pipes into dual 40 series flows with turn-downs just before the rear axle housing...drop the rumble right onto the pavement and out the sides...should sound good, me-thinks...
Stormchaos, That price seems a little high. I just had both cats. removed yesterday, and thet fabricated the "y" pipe and installed a new cat. for $170.00
