i have a spare carter/motorcraft single barrel carb that i'm going to be rebuilding...never done anything like this before...are there any books out there that would help me get through the rebuild with little or no problems???
I saw a carter book listed somewhere, I think it was in the Obsolete Ford Parts catalog. Was like $20 for a hundred pages or so, so I was reluctant to spring for it.
The kits usually come with some instructions. If you have a Ford shop manual it will have lots of instructions as to setting the carb, as well as rebuilding instructions. Also, Chilton's will have some info.
Just out of curiosity -- is it a YF? What are you running it in? I have a rebuilt YF that I snaged on eBay that I am thinking of putting on my 240 in place of the Autolite 1101. Reportedly, the YF is a little bit better carb, in terms of fuel economy, which is mostly what interests me. But I cannot quite figure out the manual choke linkage, as the rebuilt carb didn't have quite the same location and setup. If you perchance are running a 240 or 300 with a manual choke and YF, I could really use a couple of pics of the stock choke linkage.
i'm not sure if it's a YF...all i know for sure is that it says on the carb "Manufactured by Carter for Motorcraft" it's gonna go on the 300-6 that is currently in my 1/2 ton 4x4, along with a better exhaust manifold, as mine has a serious leak where the pivot pin for the heat riser valve runs thru the manifold..the carb that is currently on my truck has an aftermarket manual choke, but i'm not sure how it was set up...i'm wanting to go back to the climatic choke, rather than manual, as manual for me is nothing but a pain...we'll see if i can figure out how to make it work...
Most of the kits I've seen have got pretty good instructions in them. Just go by those and don't skip any steps and you should be fine. I'd probably stop at the local Ford dealer and pick up a new metal choke tube as they are bad about rusting/breaking at the manifold.
