oil filter disposal

I got to thinking tonight. I'm planning on doing oil changes to the truck myself to save a little money. I used to do it all the time on the farm, but since I've lived in the city, it just isn't as convenient. Lack of workspace and such.

I know the city has an annual thing where they collect chemicals and oil so that they can dispose of it properly, but what about oil filters? What do you do with them? I would think that just tossing 'em in the trash isn't all that great. Back on the farm we had a garbage pit and burned everything. Anyways, just thought I'd ask.

When I lived in the city, I just threw it out with the trash. Now that I live in the country, I throw it out with the trash.

I take my used filters to work. We have a filter guy that comes in every couple weeks and takes them away.

Same here with bigrigfixer, I take mine to work where we toss them into a drum, and the same guy who vaccums out our waste oil will take the drum, and replace it with an empty one when it's full. If you've got a local auto shop down the street, see if they don't mind tossing your filter for you, we did this for a shop that was next to us.

I slip them into the trash after draining them for several weeks.

After being quickly drained, they go in the trash. The old oil, in a jug, also goes in the trash. They find their way to a waste-to-energy plant where they are burned and turned into electricity.

I should probably find out where they go. I do the oil changes at work and we have about 20-25 oil filters sitting in a container. Hmmm......
