Question posi track

I need some information to settle a bet with a friend.
Could anyone explain the difference between posi track and 'regular drive'. And do 4 x 4's have posi track when in 2 wheel drive?
Cheers,
Dinah moe

read 'carriers, positractions,lockers,spools'
That should answer alot of your questions........

2x or 4x has nothing to do with your differential being an open rear end(regular) or limited slip(Posi). Your diff is what it is. The transfer case and hubs engaged make it 4x4.

I know you won't find it on a Ford

Posi is a Chevy term.

Try trac lock or limited slip.

Std carrier allows power to go to the wheel with the least traction - not good when one is in mud or on ice.
Ltd slip allows them to function like a std carrier until one side starts to spin. It then 'locks' the two sides together temporarily giving equal traction to both wheels.
A true locker locks the axle into a solid unit - which is not good for turns on pavement.

This is a real rough description but it gives you an idea. As peppy said, 2x or 4x makes no difference.

Also, some 4x4s have a locking transfer case to prevent the power going to the AXLE with the least traction. Sort of a locking diff between the front and rear axle.

That is true, but when both wheels are on ice and they start spinning look out When driving on ice I prefer an open diff.

There have been a couple of times (stuck ) that I wished I didn't have the open diff.
