There is no solid answer.

The 4r100 is an updated version of the E4OD transmission. It was updated for the V10 and became available for the 99 year model. The E4OD is an updated version of the C6 with an overdrive. The C6 has been around since the 60s.

Ford had two automatic tranny's in the 60s and 70s, the C6 and the C4. You always prayed that you got the C6. It was bullet proof.
