I have a 1999 E-350 5.4L that won't idle when you first start up. If you drive for a while 15 or 20 minutes you can hear the engine pick up RPMs at idle and it will do fine. Until that point you have to keep one foot on the brake and one on the gas at stoplights so that it won't cut off. Once it finally cuts in it idles perfectly until you cut the engine off. If it sits for an hour or more the cycle starts all over again. What gives????????
Any garage can change it. The one on my truck was acting up and I was just going to change it myself but, the only place that had one was the dealer and they gave me a price of $80-90 for one. I said forget that and ended up taking it to the dealer so they could do it under warranty. Only problem is it never leaves any error codes and the dealer could never get it to act up so, I ended up having to take it back three times before they just said to he** with it and just changed it. The correct name for the thing is the idle air control valve (IAC) but, it is refered to as an air bypass valve on other cars. I'm not sure if there's really any difference other than the name.
not sure, mine was done under warranty after taking to dealer 8 times for same problem, i found what the problem was by using this site. I don;t beleive its an expensive dealer installed item though. good luck
Thank you all for you assistance. Things have gotten worse since I first mailed as now it cuts off as soon as you let off the gas and won't idle ever. I will take it in next week.
I took my van in to have it fixed and of course they charged me a $65 diagnostics fee but the good news is that it was definately the IABV. Total bill was $285 but the van is running better than new. They flushed the computer and let it relearn everything. Thank you again for your help.
