lol , usually around spring break or graduation they get nailed around here. our whole block and every block behind us gets hit at least once every year. one year however, the kids decided to make it worse and actually run the freakin posts over with their car and all the mailboxes were fallen on the ground with the post and everything.
get one og those motion sensing cameras and set it up to catch em. Or get a "scarecrow" dressed up in some old huntin clothes and a fake gun, set him up in the driveway in an old chair. see what happens.
Kids, no. Here, it's the stinkin idiots that pilot the county's wing plows. If a mailbox makes it a year, you've done very well.
And if you take any measures to return the favor, damage wise, you are liable. So, it's either hang it from a string out of a tree 8 miles away and not get your mail half the time, or buy a new mailbox every 2 weeks for the duration of winter. I love NY.
Originally posted by loudfords Every time it happens around here, the cops warn against having rigid steel posts and heavy and or concrete filled boxes in case a car wipes out and hits it, but what are the odds of that happening on a rural road?
I take it that the cops in your area have never seen trees or power poles standing along side the road???
As far as snow plows go, in Maine I've seen mail boxes mounted to a board that had a 2 way hinge on 1 end, mailbox on the other. The hinge was mounted on the post. Then the top of the mailbox was secured by a chain to a hanger 8-10 feet above the ground. As the mailbox swung off center the arc of the chain raised the mailbox. After the plow goes by, the mailbox swings back to center to receive mail. The guy that had it, had it that way for the 4 years I was there. If you make the board wider than the box, the board taked the impact and shields the box.
My sons graduation class went on one of these mailbox batting sprees. They went to a neighboring rival town and did about 20 of them.Every mailbox on the road was smashed except for my fathers.I guess he spared his Grandfathers box. They are lucky that someone didn't get hurt,as they did it from the back of a pickup. The bad thing was that a few younger kids thought it was funny, and other kids did the copy-cat thing.I don't think they realize it's a federal offence.Without going into details, believe me,he won't be doing something like that again.
my graduation class did the same thing, but my parents found out about it and never let me out, lmao. my one friend took out 28 mailboxes in one night.
One solution begets another problem. I used to live on a rural road when I leved in Florida and our box got whatched too frequently. The favorite method was neither bat nor boot, rather truck and pipe bumper. I built a mailbox out of a half section of 8 inch steel pipe and some quarter plate. Welded it to a 6 inch pipe and filled it with concrete. Welded an array of 1 inch rebar to the 'foot' and set it in a whole yard of concrete.
Needles to say, box 1 truck 0. I got sued and lost. A 'roadway hazard'. It didn't happen again however.
as for the rural roads... my cousin has taken out quite a few on the way home from the bar.
my friends grandfather built a beast out of T1 steel, and... when the plow truck made its anual hit with the mailbox, the box actually won. put a full size city plow truck in the ditch, took a foot section out of the plow, and only bent the Box post. he went to court for that.
a kid from my school had the record for running over mailboxes with his fulls size car, til he hit one on a back road with a 10 foot drop off behind it. bent the car frame, cracked the oil pan, drove it home though. i bet the 4 passengers he had with had the ride of their lives!
Best cure I've heard of involves a 4x8 of plywood and a bunch of nails. Repeat offenders went to the well once to often on a favorite stretch of dirt road and ended up with a few flats. Once they took off walking, the home owner did a little redecorating to their car with a baseball bat, several shades of spraypaint, and a razor knife. Problem solved. I bet that was a hard one to explain to mom and dad.
Ive seen neighborhoods with mailboxes ran over too. they ran over the posts and all. they even ran down the For Sale signs on peoples lawns and you could see the tire tracks through the yard. i imagine that would bend the hell of out a bumper unless you have a cow catcher on it.
Rural setting....farmer who has lost 7 mail boxes............Rigs one with a blasting cap...........the kids come back for the new box, one loses part of hand.........his parents file suit............farmer says....I have had 7 mail boxes knocked down, and now they attemp to blow one up, get hurt and now they want to sue me too!!.....Outcome: lawsuit dismissed...justice prevails!!
