As a former mailbox batter from many years past, I can assure you the best way to avoid this are:

1. Configure your box in such a way as to be able to remove it daily from the post or

2. Put your mailbox in one of those brick enclosures.

Another method may also be to put some taller post (like those things at the drive through window) on either side of the box. This prevents the swinger from making contact.

And to all the folks in my hometown, yes it was me and I apologize.

Yea, my buddy cracked some ribs once. Those mailbox people are mean. There we were, smackin boxes. Here's this mailbox on a giant coil spring. He jumps out of the truck, and kicks it, HARD. Mailbox bends back on its spring, hit him in the chest, knocks him for a loop and a cracked rib. People can be so mean.

Just do like a buddy of mine did; add a "new" mailbox to the row and pump it full of cement. It feels so good to the guy beating it with a baseball bat.

There is always the sneaky trick..........take one of those big rural boxes, drop in on of those small suburban boxes, pour concrete between the two. Thats sure to break a hand or two.

My mailbox has been smashed in by some punks that live right down the street from me. I saw them do it too, but our house is too far away from the road to see the liscense plate. I actually say on the porch with my .22 the next 2-3 days waiting for them to do it again.....Its a federal offense, and you are protecting your property....

Dream Mailbox:

Box made from 1/4" steel, fabbed & painted to look like plastic.

Post made from the same steel, filled with concrete, covered in a wood venere (sp?), sunk about 4 ft into the ground

Every time it happens around here, the cops warn against having rigid steel posts and heavy and or concrete filled boxes in case a car wipes out and hits it, but what are the odds of that happening on a rural road?

A little higher then you might think. My drunk for a neighbor wiped out my mail box three times in one year. He kept putting in new posts and reattaching the old battered box everytime he did it. Thankfully he finally quit drinking and I put up a new one.

Brick mailboxes just get a chain wrapped around them, attached to a truck. Sucks!

Two ideas. A deputy's plan was to mount a standard box on a metal pole but to have the pole run through the box into the body. They'll still destroy the mailbox but it'll rattle whoevers swinging the bat.
This one I have done. Take the aforementioned 1/4" plate steel box and wrap the exterior with 1/2" sheet rubber. I've found a couple of "bats" in the yard and even some shattered window glass near the mailbox!

When I lived in an alotment every one on our street got theirs smashed. So my dad made one out of 1/4 plate (it was a bullit proof mail box) and shure enoung a few weeks they went on another smash athon and our box was the last one hit. We heard them hit it then some kid screm "Oh my god my I think my wrist is broken" and him and is buddies booked and they left their bent aluminum bat in the street. Our street never got hit again.

I totally forgot........when I was a kid, our box and post got nailed. In order to get even for the next time...........Dad brought home this 8 foot long, 2 inch diameter solid steel post from work. We sank that puppy in a 5 foot deep, 1 foot across hole filled with concrete. I guess they saw us planting it......in 20 years, no one hit it.
