My m50d is so loud that i have to crank the music when im in overdrive. Now I think it might just be a loose bearing, but I would like to know if any of you guys have had any trouble, or maybe have some ideas on what could cause this.
I know this should be something for a transmission forum, but it is the most common transmission among people here, and i trust this more then anywhere else.
How many miles? and have you checked the fluid? One major problem with this trans was leaking plugs letting all of the fluid leak out. You need to check that thing right now, and I hope it's not too late. Mine ate an input shaft bearing due to a lack of fluid and it howled like mad when it was about to go. The trans has a bad reputation, but I'd be happy with mine back( and would have it if I could figure out how to tear it down and remove that input shaft. Everything else looked good). Check that fluid before you drive another inch, and remember it takes AFT instead of gear oil.
i hae 180000 on mine and 5th howls, and first grinds sometimes. i hate the tranny. i put it in reverse and the stick comes all the over and just about touches my legs.....but i do like the OD, too bad it doesnt have a granny too....your next alternative would be a ZF 5 speed....but those are 1500 referbished. hahah. good luck.
The fluid is fine... and i have sorta the same probelm idio. Except it just pushes the stick slightly out of reverse and grinds instead of moves. It also grinds itself into third gear most of the time.
There is prolly about 90k miles on the transmission (i bought the truck at 85k so im not sure what sort of work has been done).
As for the ZF that is my next choice when this tranny blows its guts.
sounds like 'gear whine'. I heard it's from running too low rpm's in overdrive. Burnt gears is probably the culprit of the noise. My dad just lived with it in his Ranger before trading it in.
