recently purchased 1987 f150 300 I6 ... newly registered but did some searching:
?1. the door sticker decoder in the tech articles does not include transmission code "A" ... is it a T18 ???
?2. tried to check/change air filter and the screws keep turning without coming out ... they can't all be stripped? ... i can't feel a nut underneath ... is there a trick ???
Well, don't know what the code "A" is for, but if you have a stick, and its 4 speed, it's either a T18, NP435, or a BW unit(no quotes plz). If it is a 5 speed it is a M5OD. The nuts for the air cleaner is set into the plastic underneath. Have they come out any? They dont normally back all the way out, just far enough to unscrew from the nut.
the only transmission codes in the sticker decoder are D,E,M,T and U ... and my sticker isn't exactly like the one in the decoder ... i guess it doesn't apply to "older" f150's
the air cleaner screws didn't back out ... after turning them for a while i tried to take off the cover but it was still tight ... it might be stuck but since i have a history of breaking things i was hesitant to put much force on it ... maybe i'll try it again tomorrow
For the tranny then, you could just crawl under there really quick while your out there messing with your air cleaner and see whats stamped on the side of it. I saw your signiture, so that eliminates the Mazada tranny. If you can't get the cover off this second time, you might have to pull the whole box out, its not that hard. Theres a screw in the front of the vehicle, a few on the box itself and the air hoses going to the engine. Just fish it out and flip it over so you can see what your dealing with. They are metal nuts set in plastic, its possible that they may be stripped in there holes. Good luck.
if you can't get the screws out, shoot them with a lubricant, then take a utility knife, slide the blade under the screw head and try to pry up gently as you unscrew, this will focre the screw out, then check the nuts
wicky: thanks ... i might try that (after the snow leaves) ... i looked at taking out the whole unit (like franken suggested) but it looks like it's more trouble than it's worth ... the truck is running ok but i thought i'd check the filter since that's one of the few jobs i can (usually) handle
