Can a gas cap cause vapor lock?

To those of you who wish to see my current problem, please visit my post here
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...25252Bstalling

I was just creating a new thread on the theory of gas caps. I understand a fair amount when it comes to mechanics, however I have never had to ask the question "Is my gas cap working properly?".

My current problem is that the truck dies every so often and acts like it's starved for fuel. Well the last 2 times I went to fill my tank, there seemed to be an abnormal amount of pressure built up in the tank. I mean A LOT of air came out. More so than 1/4 tank of gas on a hot summer day, and it's only 55 degrees out today. Is a gas cap supposed to relieve some of this pressure, and if excess pressure is bad, can it cause the truck to die, like vapor lock, or am I just trying hard psychologically to come up with a reason for the maddness?

Or ... Maybe there is some other component that is supposed to relieve excess air? Then again maybe I live in John F. Nash's world? Any input appreciated, Thanks!

Well the excess pressure should be relieved by a tank vent system, usually built into the tank, not the cap.

You can have a vent problem, and vacuum lock, this typically happens when you ascend to high altitudes (more than 3000 feet) and the temperature drops. I've seen more than a few autos stranded atop Beartooth pass at 10,700 feet.
