i have a 96 F20 with a 5.8L and a E40D when the truck sits for bout an hour or so when u start it it has a loud tick like its a lifter after bout 5-10 sec it almost goes a way all my local shops said it was a lifter so i tore it down and put in some new roller lifters and it still ticks, but after it warms up u cannot hear it when its idling but if u listen while ur driving it u can hear a slight tick, especially when u put it under a load like pulling a hill or something. It never done this before until one day i had to go across the mountain pulling a big hill on interstate it seemed like it didn't have any power so i run it hard just to keep up my speed and ever since then its been ticking. I brought it home and done a tune up on it plugs wires and so one and it runs a lot beter now but it has a very annoying tick to it any help would be greatly app.
One possibility is a cracked exhaust manifold, Ford's are notorious for this. An exhaust leak would certainly take away some low end power. Just something to check out.
95 f150 took the words out of my head before i could type it. I had a 89 f150 and now a 92 f150 both with 5.0 and both with cracked passenger side mainifolds.
my 87 f-150, 351 cracked a manifold, but it was like instant, driving home one night it was fine the next day on the way out louder than a bastad, and from what i see it seems like 351's tick, mine does it my friends does it and all the ones i test drove did it.
I am having the same problem with my 95 5.0 I have assumed all along its a lifter also now you have me thinking about the manifolds. If it is the exhaust manifold wouldnt it be there all the time? Mine is noisy when it starts then once up to operating temp it quiets right down so I cant even hear it. Still think its the manifold?? Help its driving me nuts!!!!!
yeah mine driving me crazy its doing the same thing but after about 10 seconds or so it quiets down to were u can't hear it idling but when ur driving it u can hear a slight tick.
That's what I was going to say. It's possible it could be closing up some with the metal expanding. So you'd be better of checking for the leak when you first start up cold. A lot less likely to get burned that way too.
Cut off a piece of hose about 3 feet long and run it along the exhaust manifolds with one end to your ear and listen for a leak, usually exhaust leaks are pretty easy to track down.
