what can one do to keep his E4OD in service longer/
I got 184,000 on this truck tranny & it seems to be working fine,
I was thinking about a fluid & filter change for the "slushbox"
Is this a viable track to follow??
fluid and filter change would be good, when i had mine done i had a shop do it with one of those fancy machines that sucks the old fluid out and pushes the new fluid in,this way all the fluid is changed in the torque convertor and and everywhere.or you can just drain the pan and change the filter the old fasioned way, just becarfull when you pull down the filter,be sure you get the old sealing ring out of the sump, they dont always stay with the old filter,as was the case with mine,i found two other sealing washers jambed up there when i did mine the first time, shortly there after i had to put a reman in her.think it may have been sucking air,but it did have 136,000 on it.
The key to long tranny life is these simple rules...
Keep the fluid Clean and Cool.
I change my fluid at about 12-15k, I change my aux filter at every oil change. If I happen to overheat my fluid I change it as soon as I can (keep an eye on your tranny temp gauge if you have one)
I change my fluid by taking loose the return line loose before it hits the metal return line heading back to the tranny, I then point this rubber line into a container. I have someone start the truck leaving it in park. The fluid then pumps out for a little bit, when I see air start I yell, they shut it off. I then replace what was pumped out, then start the process over again. I keep doing this until I am getting fresh fluid out. then hook the system back up and top her off.
Now at every third change I also change the factory filter in the pan.
I have purchased a drain plug to put in the pan so here next time I will have some extra work by drilling a hole in the pan. But after that I won't have to take a bath in tranny fluid when I drop the pan.
I as well have a ton of miles on my E4OD with no problems. I also feather the shifts a little, I know when she is going to shift so I let off a little there is no sense in letting her slam into gear, let the clutches/gears mate then pour the power on.
I drive The Enterprise like a sports car so by all rights I should have trashed my tranny long ago. I firmly believe it's the way I treat her that makes her last. You would not believe how many folks you talk to change oil on a regular basis but never even think about the tranny.
Spec,
no, shes an original truck(virgin )
bought from a plasterer(matureman) who used it to lug some drywall, paint & palster. According to the way she loooks & I have been from A-ho;e to bellybuton( yoi kno) & its a tight Ride with some TLC that I have been feeding her I'm hoping to get a couple of years out the trans( light towing & hauling) .
Right on Argve about the maintence rule & the sporty booting too
I work this slushbox like a stick a lot
All replys thanx
Happy Paddys
My buddie has a '94 that he beats the crap out of, and his tranny went at around 160,000 miles. Then I've seen guys that baby there trucks have them yanked under warranty. I do think that keeping the fluid clean and 'unburnt' is great, but there is no sure fire solution to make them bulletproof. If the C-6 would of still had problems 15 years later, do you think Ford would've wasted time trying to fix it?
