Headder questions

hey guys i have a 78 F250 4x4 Lariat Camper Specia with a 400 and a C6 tranney. i want to put some headders on it but my dad said they probbally wouldnt fit because it had the emmision stuff and its got ac but he did say if they would fit it would probabally be very expensive to put them in. i was wondering if anyone has done this before and how expensive it would be for me to do it?

78 f250 with emissions junk? is it a calf. truck? Not much should be one there, maybe het induction, but thats not really emissions. If you can get away with it, take it off, just leave the cats on. The EGR thing, i think there are companies that make the EGR hose hookup in their headers, so you would be able to replace them, cheaper than what you think, maybe about 150 for the headers.

L and L products out of Texas makes outstanding headers for these trucks. They are a little pricey, but i have found them to be worth every penny. They make the fenderwell header as well as chassis exit. I have a set on my bronco for three years with none of header flange warpage or constantly retightening of the header bolts at the cylinder head. Go to landlproducts.com.

I recently sold my 78 F250 4x4 camper special. It had the same engine/tranny you have and had headers on it. They were on it when I bought it, so I don't have a clue what brand they were. It was a tight fit, and I can't remember exactly, but one side rubbed a little on the front drive shaft. I talked to a couple different guys and they said any muffler shop could do a mod to stop to stop the rubbing. I think the problem was right where the exhaust pipe hooked onto the header.... sorry I can't remember the details. I had to change the starter once, and it was a real pain working around those headers!

your truck may have somthing like a smog pump or somthing and if your truck is exempt from emissons in your state (79 is exempt in CT for example) you should be fine

While long tubes build alittle better power than a shorty header shorties are easier to get on, don't cause starter heat, won't interfear with a sway bar (some long tubes do), etc. Ford actually put shorty headers on many small block powered cars/vans and some trucks from the factory. You can pick-up a set on e-bay for about 30-40 bucks shipped. If you don't mind spending the extra money go for coated headers, they look better and last longer.
I'm not sure if you can find shorties for a 400 or even if you would want them but maybe this info will help out some small block guys.

I am running headman fenderwell exit headers and they work great, about 160 or so, but exit outside the frame rails so it is easy to run exhaust, and they fit real good.

I would kill for a set of shorty headers for my 77 F350 Super Camper Special. I have a manual 4spd, 2wd and power steering and I have looked every where . They are listed for non-power steering, 4X4, etc. and etc.
I'm ready to punch someone in the neck . Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeff

Does Sanderson, or L and L, or any of these other companies make headers for a '78 F150, 351m, that is NOT 4WD? I can't seem to find a 2WD header for this year... Maybe I haven't looked hard enough, but every catalog I have (summit, JC Whitney, LMC) only has headers for 4WD trucks in my year.

Frustrated....
