K&N, Amen!

I just installed a K&N filter on my 99 SD V10 and oh baby!!! My mileage jumped from 10-13 to 14-19, the rear wheel HP increased from 180 all the way up to 272, torque went from 400 to 565. I now have to be very careful when accelerating that I don't smoke the tires. My 0-60 times dropped by two full seconds and I am running 1/4s in the 16s.

I am totally sold on the K&N air filter. My whimpy sounding V10 now sounds like a 502 with straight pipes and I think the truck actually sits about four inches higher. My paint is shinier and I have been told that the truck smells like ribs on the grill as I drive down the road.

Seriously though. All you SD owners out there who think an air filter is going to make a difference in your engine are dreaming. Sure we would all like a magical fix that didn't cost an arm and a leg, but there isn't one. Period. About the only thing that will juice up the 6.8 is a supercharger or a total rebuild with high performance parts. Either way, you are looking at thousands of dollars, not $49.95.

Don't mean to burst your bubble but...beware. Got several friends who run/have run K&N filters. All have reported better fuel economy. But, some of them have since stopped using the K&N because of the amount of sand, dirt, grit, they have found beyond the filter, where it should never get. Allowing better airflow will definitely improve fuel economy. But, if that improved airflow allows more dust, sand, dirt particles thru...well the thousands you save in fuel may have to go to repair the motor.

OK, I bit. It wasn't until the paint got shinier that I started smelling something. With plenty of experience making a 4.0L OHV go from 160hp to 200, I concur that there is no quick fix. First is to check your final drive ratios. If you're running under a 4.10, a ratio boost will do wonders. Next you have to concentrate on the whole suction/discharge system. It wasn't until I went to a conical filter, bigger MAF body, throttle body, headers, cat-back that things really started feeling much better.

Holding off on doing any of these on the 5.4L until it's broken in.

Regards,

Bob

For those of us w/ 99 V10's I'd go with whatever Ford did to the 2000's. I don't recall what the torque increase is but I know they gained 35 hp. The second hand information I've heard says they changed grind angles on the valves but not valve diameter. The cam timing is also changed along with fuel/air/spark adjustments to take advantage the new cam and valve grind. For ~ $1700 Banks will sell you a complete exhaust system w/ headers that adds ~48 hp and 68 ft/pd of torque to the 99, I don't know what it does for the 2000. I've read that Ford is planning a 3 or 4 valve head V10 for 2002, (maybe with DOHC and variable valve timing we can hope?. Given the paucity of hot rod parts and expense for all this stuff I think I'm just going to leave mine stock and wait ~3 years to see what's new. I've read that the replacement for the 7.3L diesel is going down to 6.0 liter but hp, torque and mileage will way up. If that's so, I might go diesel on my next truck. Any other hot rod ideas for the V10?

The money you are saving now will be offset with the cost of rebuilding youir motor prematurely.

Use K&N and pay the price. Try Amsoil Dual Stage filter. If you have a problem with restriction install a second airbox.

Scott.

Guys... read the intro post again. It was a joke making fun of the K&N air filter, not one recommending it.

"horsepower increased from 180 all the way up to 272, torque went from 400 to 565."
