Congress has authorized pilots to be armed, but the guys in charge of the Transportation Security Administration obviously know better, and are making it highly impractical for pilots to do so, and highly improbable that many ever will. Now they're dragging their feet on letting air freight pilots be armed.
The stories about the absurdities at security check points are endless, and growing. Recently, two air marshalls tackled a passenger for making inappropriate comments, pointed a pistol at a planeload of passengers, and later arrested an innocent passenger because "We didn't like the way you looked at us." TSA said they did "...a very good job."
Employees of federal agencies such as the FDIC, DOE and EPA are allowed to carry concealed weapons through airports, and on flights. While I sincerely hope this policy applies only to some employees, but not to all, I think it's ludicrous to allow this stuff to happen, and still thwart Congress' intention of allowing pilots to be armed. After all, who's in charge?
I think pilots should be armed. Not sure why FDIC and EPA workers need to conceal firearms on a commercial flight, makes no sense at all why they can and pilots aren't allowed to.
They're still not allowing corporate jets and private aircraft in to Washington National Airport. And, three private airports here around DC are still under restrictions that are absurd.

And don't forget the DOE - Dept. of Education. I think most of us are in favor of armed pilots. It makes so much sense that even Congress approved it. It's just a bunch of bureaucrats who refuse to take "yes" for an answer, who are jeopardizing the safety of thousands of people every day.
Pilots who want to be armed have to pass a rigorous psychiatric exam, take a week off work (without pay) to fly out to New Mexico (IIRC), drive 200 miles to a training center (no airport!), pay for their own training, and then make it all the way back home and try to make up for the lost wages and expenses they incurred in their noble attempt to make American skys safer for all of us.
Makes me want to be a pilot so that I can bathe in the warmth of all that appreciation.
And what do the DOE and EPA folks have to do to carry guns on planes? Nobody seems to know.
Works for me. When Allah Rajia jumps up with his box cutter just blow him away instead of letting him aim the plane at the Sears Tower or the Empire State Building.

If it weren't for the pressurized cabins, we could still "let him off" at his stop.

They didn't. Congress said to allow pilots to carry guns, and TSA said ok - but first, they have to be trained. Oh yeah, and they have to pay for it themselves, and have to take off work to do it - without pay. And they have to travel to a remote part of the country, 200 miles from the nearest airport. Oh yeah, and before they're allowed to do any of that, they have to pass a rigorous psychiatric exam, just in case their annual and semi-annual physicals and in-flight, unannounced competency tests might miss something.
Pilots may be in charge of the safety of hundreds of people at a time, but, it would seem, the TSA does not want a pilot to actually protect his passengers or the innocent people on the ground. DOE bureaucrats with no training are ok, since being bureaucrats places them among the elite, who are innately endowed with a sense of what is best for others.
