My '97 has a slight exhaust leak that I cannot find. It is somewhere on the drivers side under the hood. I have loosened and retightened the collector bolts at the exhaust/manifold flange and it does not appear to be leaking there. I cannot see any telltale signs of a leak around the manifold/head flange or anywhere on the manifold itself. Any ideas on how to track this down?
If you can get ahold of a mechanics stethascope that would make it real easy to fine. I'm not sure about this but you might be able to make one from a piece of small diameter plastic tubing. Just hold one end next to your ear and move the other end along the exhaust system till you hear the leak through the tubing.
I had the same problem with my 97 Explorer V8 AWD. As I was torqueing down the manifold bolts, I found that 2 were loose and 1 was missing. Replaced the lost one and the leak was fixed. I encountered loose manifold bolts on the right side as well and torqued them down.
Yup its your manifold bolts or it the pipe that bolts into it which you can see in the wheel well, those bolts need to be torqued, i had a problem with mine, they would keep comming lose could not find it took it to my mechanic found it right away, first few times he did not torque it last time he removed the bolts cleaned the threads torqued them now its nice and quite, he did it for free for me
