Alright I finally am ready to change from my drum brakes on front to disk. I got a dana 44 axle out of a 78 truck, the master cylinder, porportioning valve, and power booster. Now, I am needing to know where do I start? I have no clue where the porportioning valve is, and can I use my existing brake lines. I am taking the whole axle and components out of my truck and putting in the one out of the 78. Is everything gonna line up correctly and work properly? Hope somebody can shed some light on this for me.
Follow your brake lines down out of the master cyl and they will run into the proportioning valve, which is sometimes attatched to the frame below the master cyl, or on the frame crossmember. You may be able to use your existing steel lines with some re-bending if the other valve has ports in a little different location. This would be a good time to replace your old rubber brake lines going to the wheels with some fresh ones.
Provided that they didn't make any significant changes to the frontend from '75 to '78, the disc brake axle should bolt right up. You have checked to see that it has the right gear ratio right?
If there are differences, you could leave your axle on the truck and just change everything from the steering knuckles out, and the added benefit would be getting a new set of ball joints in there while it's all apart.
