Thermostat?

Check the earth on ya temp gauge?

Alloy heads tend to run the engine a bit cooler, don't ask me why though. Bit of overkill for a temp. fluctuation problem though.

Flush the radiator and consider removing the thermostat alltogether. Just a suggestion, not recommended.

Come on people, someone's gotta hav had this problem b4. Throw in some ideas!

Usually a bad thermostat. Sometimes bad electrical connections on the gauges.

If you have an electric fan maybe it is going bad and not cooling when you are stuck in traffic.

Also might be a soft hose. Sometimes under cruise RPM the hoses will collapse which of course cuts off the flow of water. When you stop to check the problem, the suctions goes down, the hose goes back to normal and the temperature drops and you don't find the problem. The way to check for this is first squeeze your large radiator hoses to see if they are too squishy. Most radiator hoses are either stiff or have a spring inside to keep them stiff. Old hoses get soft or the spring rusts away. Another way to check is to have your engine up to temperature and they pop the hood and rev the engine to cruise rpm while watching the hoses. If this is your problem you will see the hose collapse.

Naturally don't stick your hands down there while the engine is runnig, doh!
Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

She's not going through menopause, is she?

First thing is always to replace the thermostat. Also, verify that the engine realy is hot when the gauge says it is. It's not hard to tell.
