Tranny ID question

OK way back when I posted a question about the tranny for mt '80 F-250 4wd with a 300 six and four speed. Well I pulled it tonight and low and behold it ain't what I thought it was. It appears to have an aluminum top and what looks to be a pin holding the shifter in place. The tranny I bought came from an 82 F-250 4wd that had a 302 in it that has the screw on cap that holds the shifter in place. They were supposed to be the same trannys (np 435).

Since I already have the replacement tranny sitting on the floor, I am considering throwing it in, but it's about 1 1/2 inches longer. I have plenty of room left in the slip yoke, but am wondering what I will have to do to the cross member to make it fit. I am considering removing the two braces that run to the top frame rail and just redrilling the mounting holes, will this work? Any other suggestions? TIA

the one you bought is a borgwarner tranny. good tranny. it and the new process are about the same as far as strength and gearing, but it is a differant tranny. the holes may already be in the frame for the crossmember braces. good luck!

Like jimbare said, most crossmembers have sliding holes in the crossmembers and different holes in the frame. However, I think you'll find that the tranny mounts will be in different places on the tranny itself. They normally hit pretty close.

You shouldn't need to do anything with the crossmember. You may have to turn the mount itself around(they are offset).

I don't think you can flip the crossmembers in a 4wd because of the drop down lip for the front driveshaft? I know the 2wd you can.. Unless I wasn't paying attention when I was swapping ends on my f-250 when I was putting in the crossmember..

I'm not referring to the crossmember, but the rubber isolator itself, the studs are offset in it.
