After the dealer told me to take a hike, I foung a great mechanic that worked on my v10 to get me by in the interim while I do battle with the dealer. He put in all new lifters. The engine has 54,000 on it and they were just plain worn out. This is the first v10 he did but he has done several v8's The truck can cruise at 75 nice now. I still have the loud start up noise and it is there at the top of every shift. It is anoying. I am on a desperate effort to find any tsb's that relate to piston slap. I think this y tube is a bit far fetched. I can't believe the noise in my truck is from the exhaust.I did go on alldata.com but thet stop at the year 98. I was able to get a list from them on 40 tsb's on the 99 f350 v10. Everything from fuel economy ( or lack of) to Front stability bars that break off to tow hooks that screw up the air bag system aand set it off pre mature. I have all the numbers of the tsb's but I do not know where to find info on them or to actually view them. There were none on piston slap like I was told. Anyone have any ideas? ( lots on the breaks and rotors and hubs.
Sorry to hear about your saga, my V10 has the piston slap, but once it's up to temp it basically is gone. I run synthetic oil which made a difference in how loud it was but it's still there on start up. I just turned 170,000 but I don't know if miles have anything to do with cause. I have an Ebay "Y" pipe to put on mine but I didn't think that would reduce the noise but who knows maybe it will. Keep us informed, the V10 is one of Fords better engines and I would like to know what the cause ends up being.
What oil are you using? Modular motors shouldn't run any oil thicker than Xw30. People who have used oils such as 15w40 and 20w50 have reported premature wear problems.
