im rebuilding a 360 and want to throow it in an old mustang... i seen one( a moderator) say that it was the same block( and more) as the 390 with few exceptions... where can i find the info to verify this before i go buyin or making mods and such?
The only difference between the 360 and the 390 was the crank, rods and pistons. I did the conversion myself. My 390 used to be a 360. Other than the above they are 100% identical.
ok another question then i want to put a 4 speed toploader in it... will the bell housing off the 360 matchup and fit the car or do i need to get one and if so where?
The truck bellhousing is almost 1/2" deeper, you would need to use a small block top loader for the added reach or else find a car bell to use the big block top loader.
If your Mustang did not have the 390 in it to start with, you are in for some work. This is not just a swap in, the FE is completely different and larger than your small blocks. What's the story on the 'Stang, you may need to re-think this...
The Mustangs that had the FE (1967 and later) needed special exhaust manifolds to fit. Don't even think about it in an earlier one unless you want to start cutting the shock towers.
There are far easier engine swaps for your Mustang than an FE, unless you really want to get into some major customizing work..
i know already some of the modifications i need to make... but need to know what i need to make it all work... like what would be a good bell housing and toploader to get for it.. and about the exhaust manifolds where can i get them?
I was thinking of doing the same thing to a 69 fast back. I do not want to destroy this thing to do it. I want to be able to undo any changes I make to this car so that I can sell it if I have to.
What year 'stang are you gonna do this? It's a huge job on the '64 1/2 - '66. The '67 - '70 had the big block as a option so it's just a matter of getting the right parts. The big block 'stangs also used a different sway bar as the small block sway bar will hit the FE oil filter. BTW you need the car style filter adaptor that points the filter straight down. The '67 big block motor mounts are different than the '68. Your heads also have to have the diagonal bolt patterns on the exhaust so the "GT" manifolds will bolt up. I'd try to find the car bellhousing and a big block toploader so you don't have to jerry-rig everything else. These engines are heavy so you'll want to upgrade the front springs and it would be nice to have a 9-inch rear too.
its goin into a 68 and will be able to get a sway bar easy ??? im lookin to put shorty headers on it for duel exhaust... i already planned on springs all around
