I have been searching for an economical set of plain steel painted headers for an '87 F150 4X4 with a 300 six. Can somebody tell me a specific brand and part number that will fit this truck? I know about Clifford's, but they are a bit pricy (at least the ones I found were $300). I hear that Hedman 2WD headers will fit, but it is impossible to get the starter off once you put them on. Anybody know of a solution? There are zillions of these trucks around. Seems like somebody must make a decent economical header for them. Thanks. in advance for any help. Mark.
It is not impossible to get the starter off with the Hedmans, but it is not as easy as stock. I've put two starters on mine since installing the Hedmans. If it's that big of an issue you can always use the smaller starter from a later model truck. I think they started using it in 92 or 93 and kept it through the remainder of the 300's lifespan.
Will the small starter come off without taking the headers off? Are these the 2WD Hedman headers that are currently offered? If this is correct I may give them a try since I plan to put one of the small gear reduction starters on anyway. Thanks. Mark.

I havn't tried it, but it should. I don't have to take my headers off to get the large starter off, so the small starter should all but jump out.

Yes. They are only listed for 73-89 2wd models for some reason. On earlier trucks they don't fit the 4wd because of a crossmember that the late models don't have.
FWIW, plan an entire weekend for installing them; they are far from an easy bolt on. You will need to notch the alternator bracket and install some spacers behind it for #1 primary clearance. You will also have to remove of modify the EGR and Thermactor systems. I've written extensive explanations on what is required in previous posts. You should be able to find them with a search.
