Distributor differences ?

I'm trying to isolate a really bad sound on my rebuild that is sitting in my friends basement. I am putting an '88 Lincoln Town car engine and tranny in my '76 F-100, and pulling out a roller motor that went in the truck 6 or 7 years ago that my father had put in. The EFI distributor obviously won't work since I'm going with the carb setup for now (efi to come later), so I'm having to use the distributor off of the old motor. The EFI distributor is 1/2 inch longer on the end of the shaft than the distributor off of the old engine, but it worked on the roller motor that is being yanked out of the truck. I'm only getting about 3/16 th's of an inch engagement from the end of the distributor onto the oil pump driveshaft. Is there a distributor that will work with the '88 Town Car motor that has that extra length to it? I''m afraid that might be causing my terrible noise. Thanks!

No ideas on what type of distributor to use, or what year of vehicle I would ask for a distributor that would work on this configuration?

thanks!
