your right sinister it is traction but its also torque , you can have all the traction in the world and with no power your not going to pull anything. So if the traction is fairly equal we then would have to look at power and other specifics like weight, wheelbase, alignment, transmission and even the driver and after all he wasnt pulling a cat bulldozer he was pulling another truck with at least somewhat equal weight and traction.
one thing i think is funny about pulling is that people think just b/c they have a 351, 0r a 350 they can pull a 6 cyl. or a four banger backwards no problem. I once watched 92' a 2wd dodge pickup with a 360 get pulled all over the parking lot by a 1987 toyota 4x4 with a 4 banger. so yes traction matters but if both trucks have the about the same trction whoever has the most torque will prolly win.
a guy in my shop has a 318 dakota & he is always bragging about it. he wasnts to have a tug-0-war..... i think he had got to be kidding....
like ya'll said, its not so much about torque, cid, or make of the truck...... it all boils down to traction. i have a 3/4 ton truck with mud tires all around to his mini me dakota with street tires- do the math.
i'm not even stressin him tryin to punk me out... i dont want to risk tearing up my truck just for the pleasure of out pulling a dodge dakota.
now if i had my old beater 85 f-150 with the 300..... now that would be a good time
street tires would do better than mudders, greater the durface of the tire touching the ground, better the traction. Forinstance, if you has to computer controller trucks, exactly the same except one had m/ts and one had a/t's, i bet the truck with the a/t's would win.
depends on the surface your on. if im in grass or dirt, no way he have any advantage. nobody in their right mind should do tug of wars on pavement. (not sayin it doesnt get dont) unless of course they have spare u-joints and rearends just laying around...
Tug of wars also aren't very even if the rope/chain isn't hooked at the exact same level on both trucks. One higher than the other, and someone has an instant advantage.
