My 02 EB does not have the blinkers in the mirrors but on the outside housing. Does anybody know when they made that change and the reason why? Thanks in advance.
I think the reason was because of some complaints over the very high cost of replacing the mirrors with the LED signals. If the LED burns out or is damaged, you've got to replace the whole mirror at several hundred bucks a pop. With the new signals, you just replace a bulb.
I think there were problems with the silvering process on the turn signal mirrors that ruined their reflectivity. I'm under the impression that Muth, the company that manufactures these mirrors, still offers them for aftermarket conversions. I think the seperate bulb/lens is a better idea anyway. Not as slick, but easier for others to see.
My LED mirrors had the de-silvering problem. Alot of the chrome in the mirror came off and it was hard to see out of them. I ended up ordering a new pair from Muth ($189 for the pair) and replacing them. Muth claims that have fixed the de-silvering problem. We will see. BTW I have a 99.
Don't the models before the '03s also have lights on the running boards?
When we bought our '03 the salesperson said they made the switch to these mirrors because they light up the running boards and are used as turn indicators.
He said the snow would build up on the running boards and the lights on them would be no good.
I was under the impression that the turn signal mirrors were an option. Mine is a 00 with the signals on the outside. In my opinion these are more functional. The intent for these signals is to alert a driver in the lane right next to you in your blind spot. The LED mirrors aren't aimed in that direction. The bulbs that are in my 00' are aimed in that direction. I'm not disputing the defacing problem just an opinion.
That's interesting, when I was looking for a Expy, I looked at several trucks from 97' to 02'. Not all of them had the turnsignals on the mirrors, they were however all EB's. What year was it standard equipment?
