I have a 2000 4x4 EB Xpy with the 5.4l. I am wanting to change the transmission fluid because it has a very slight vibration in O/D when the engine is working to go up hill. It does this just before before it shifts out of O/D down to a lower gear to get up the hill.
Once it shifts the vibration goes completely away. I have 40,000 miles on the vehicle and to my knowledge the transmission has never been serviced. Is it necessary to have it power flushed or is it ok to just drain the pan and torque converter. Any help would be appreciated. It also has the tow package.
Thanks for any help...
Thanks. I have read a lot both ways about the power flush and was not sure if it was worth it. Is it possible that a fluid change could help this problem
It's not hard to do on your own (following the PROCEDURE). I did it and got 15 1/2 qts out of the torque converter and transmission pan. Refilled it w/ Mobil 1 ATF.
Note: Be cautious to only refill with the type of fluid listed on the tranny dipstick. Don't interchange Mercon V for Mercon or visa-versa. Lot's of threads documenting damage done to these units when dealerships and tranny repair shops use the wrong fluid.
Thanks for all of the replies. I am going to change it myself this weekend and I hope it fixes the problem. I may have more questions before it is all over so be ready. I just bought this expy about 2 months ago and love it. I have 2 kids now so I had to move up from the dodge 4x4. I really liked the dodge truck, but the expy is so much nicer. Better gas mileage to.
Thanks again.
I changed the fluid this weekend and everything went smooth. Good instructions, thanks. Unfortunately it did not fix the slight vibration. I guess I am going to take it to the ford dealership soon$$$$ The vibration is not bad at all but not normal and it bugs me. Thanks for all of the help and if anyone thinks of anything else just let me know.
I use Lubegard (Red) in my Trans and it is the only additive I actually believe in. It cost $9 a bottle, so it might be worth trying before taking it to a dealer.
