have a mystery that maybe someone could help me solve... when i start my 1994 f 150 auto. 302 V-8 and let it idle there is a noise in the engine that sounds like a distant telephone ringing that comes and goes.
friends have suggested it may have to do with the fuel pump, but i never noticed any other symptoms of fuel related problems until the other day. the truck starts up fine, but twice when i have put it into drive, the truck wants to die, but i give it some gas and it's fine. this happening got me thinking maybe the ringing is pump realted.
am i way off base or is this ringing/stalling a common symptom of a fuel problem?
I had a phone on my 89 302, turned out to be the spark plug heat shield vibrating against the exhaust manifold.
As for the idle, check the IAC, see if it's dirty/sticking or inop. Always a good idea to pull the codes, too.
I want to pull the codes by this weekend to see what else I can find, but this ringing seems to happen when the compressor turns off after the engine has been idiling for a while.
when the compressor kicks on, the ringing seems to stop, but when it stops, the ringing happens. its not a constant ring, but just like a phone... rings then stops and then again...
cajunbuck, it might not be compressor related it could just be the difference in idle speeds when the compressor is off compared to when it is running, just a thought. i had a 92 f-150 with a 302 and it had a funny ring that was very faint never had any problems with it so i never tried to find out what it was!
