i have an 88 460 in my jeep pickup. it has a projection analog tbi. i believe the ignition is a duraspark. i dont feel that my ignition is quite right and was considering upgrading to an msd. if i did is my stock dizzy ok. exactly what ignition parts would i upgrade for the best bang for my buck? i have read that the dist vacumn should be 0 at idle is that true? i have heard of others setting their timing at high rpms instead of idle is that effective? finally what is the recommended timing for a stock 460?
thanks dan
your stock dizzy should be ok, The msd 6 series is the one I run on my trucks, but I would definatly upgrade your coil also, I went to the msd blaster SS, and I am really happy with that, yes you should have 0 vac at idle at the dizzy, I set my timing at 3000 rpm jus tto make sure my advance is working and the total timing is correct but I am not using anything resembling stock timing, and according to my book the stock timing should be 10deg btdc, but don't have the figure for total timing. hope that answers all the questions. By the way when I time my engines I put a vacum gauge on an manifold port at idle, and time for the best vac. then back off just about 1deg
thanks for your help. i was under the impression that vacuum at the manifold reacts different than the vacuum sent to the distributor. If i remember right the distributor vacuum increases as the throttle opens as the vacuum at the manifold decreases. if you check manifold vacuum will that give you the reading you need.
i am just tryin to learn something here not doubting your experience.
EDIT:
Is there any advantage in upgrading the plug wires as well?
thanks dan
In answer to the wires .... yes
I would use a good 8mm min wire, once again this is a preference but I like the taylor wires, the better the wire the better your spark will be.
