I still wish that the top came off over the driver too. Not to say that blazers are any good because mine was crap but the one thing that never gave me a problem was when I took the top off. It only leaked from the front windshield after my head went through it.
Like most others said, you should not have leaks when putting the top back on, unless the weatherstripping is crimped or it's worn out. If you take the top on and off a few times a year, you can put just half of the bolts in to hold it. It takes a while to mess with all 13, and some of them are always hard to line up. Take care not to lose any of the clips that the bolts go into, either remove them or put tape over them. They will rattle off when you're not looking!
I enjoyed having the top off so much, I bought a Skyler softtop a few years ago for rain protection. Before that, I just carried a big tarp and rope in the event of a rain shower. It's been close to two years without the hardtop, but I keep it for when it gets really cold/freezing for a few days. That doesn't happen every year down here, though.
I fab'ed up a quick and cheap softop solution last summer. Aluminum L metal across the top using the hardtop hardware, screwed some snaps in and went to a boat yard and bought a bimini top out of their bin for $20 (match the width of your bed).
But if you want a real softop, check out this guy's...IMHO, it's the nicest one i've seen...just don't know where he got it yet.
www.broncograveyard.com has soft tops for about $450 it takes about an hour to install i installed one and never did go back to the hard top and the soft top never leaks
