I picked up an 89 F250 with a 5.8 and a C6. The price was beyond good. When I drove it home I thought at the time it only had 1st and 2nd gear. I was only able to manage 35mph. I have since figured out that it was only 1st but slippy. To top it off, I didn't have much in the way of brakes.
After doing plenty of searching here, I replaced the Vacuum modulator and cleaned up some vacuum leaks. Now I have 1st and 3rd and I also got the brakes back. I discovered today that the trans never goes into 2nd gear. Even if I put the gear selector in 2nd, all I get is 1st. Additionally, When accelerating, it will hold 1st gear unless I let off the throttle, then it will engage 3rd.
It goes into gear fine, reverse too. Your help is much appreciated.
It can be adjusted externally but before doing so drop the pan and see if the struts are in position.
The lining is very thin and if worn out you will have metal to metal contact with the drum.
If the band is worn or broken there is a "snap" version that can be installed without removing the transmission.
