Cleveland vs Modular vs Windsor

With all the interchangable parts, I was wondering what exactly sets these motors apart, thanks.

The 351M and 400 use different crankshafts and pistons, but they are otherwise functionally identical (same blocks, heads, etc.). The 351C and the 351M/400 are members of the same engine "family," and so they have some common parts.

Check here for more info on the 351M/400, and some info on the 351C, such as parts interchangeability.

(I assume you were referring to the 351M when you mentioned "Modular," and not the 4.6/5.4 V8s.)

Didn't FoMoCo slap the cleveland heads on the 302 to produce the "Boss" motor? Also, when looking for parts it seems the 351C and 351m/400m will have the same listing for camshafts, intake manifolds and the likes. I was just wondering, aside from the mounting what the differences are.

Actually the Boss 302 came before the 351C and the head design was modified to fit the "new" 351C block. Camshafts are interchangeable between the C and M but not intakes. The M has a taller block which means the C intake is too narrow to fit.

No, no, I was wondering what parts were interchangable between C's, M's, and Mod's, since that seems to be what the poster is suggesting.

C's and M's share many parts including heads, cams, distributors, timing sets, oil pans and valve covers because they're in the same engine family/series (335). W's do not share many parts with the M's or C's because they're a different engine family.

when he said modular i think he meant the 351M/400s
mod. motor and modular are more comonly referd to 4.6 and 5.4 motors.
A simple M will work just fine.

all ford small blocks share the same bore spacing and head bolt pattern. the heads from 351W will bolt on to a 351C/351M/400 but they don't enterchange.

What do they mean by "modular" except that they are the 4.6 and the 5.4. What's special about them, or is that just the engine series?

Ah, this is where I was getting confused.

Modular is the name given to Fords new OHC motors.

The term "modular" refers to the interchageability of pieces within engines of the same family. The V8 pistons are the same as the V8 pistons, etc. In many senses the 335 series was a very modular engine family with the same type of parts interchange.
