Most suspension related fasteners use fine thread as do many other critical fasteners. [/B]
I agree. U-bolts that hold axles on leaf springs are a good example. I've never seen them with lock washers, and I've never seen one easy to get off. The proper torque on those fine thread bolts seems to roll (distort) the threads just a little. Best to never try to re-use them - cut em off and replace em!!

id have to agrea to an extend on the u bolt most light trucks like ares yes use fine threads but the heavier trucks namely my ten wheel grain truck uses course threads on the u bolt but them u bolts are close to an inch around. I agrea with the surface are thing tho makes sense. but when i put an add a leaf kit on my truck it came with new ubolts and lock washers. the threads were fine thread however.

Grade 5 and grade 8 cap screws are available down to 1/4 diameter in both fine and coarse thread. Most hardware stores don't carry them because of low demand. Most any bolt and nut company will carry them. If I remember correctly, fine thread cap screws were about 10-15% stronger partly because the minor diameter is not as deep as on coarse thread cap screws.

I must have started a decent debate here.

I have one other question now. I decided to go to Ford to replace the carriage bolts & nuts in my bed. I need six of them.

The Ford dealership here says they can not get them & do not have any. Does anyone know where I could get those right now? I would prefer to use what the manufactorer used on the bed of my 88 F-150.

Many of the Ford parts suppliers carry bolt kits for the bed, and bumpers. May want to check out Autokrafter's online catalog. Run search under 'F100 series' then under search type in 'bolts'. May find they offer bolt kit for the beds.

Have found Restorationspecialties.com. not sure about the bed bolts, but many of the hard to find hardware, particularly with the body bolts, fasteners like speed nuts, fender fasteners, etc. They also sell weatherstrip but i tend to prefer some of the popular ford suppliers who have the kits specifically for the model truck.

Good luck,
dave

I checked autoKrafter & appears I have found them I think. Below is there description.

Fits 1985-96 Ford pickup truck F-Series Styleside. This bed mount kit by Totally Stainless features carriage head bolts and includes 12 pieces. Stainless steel is superior to chrome plating because it won't crack or peel as it isn't a surface coating but the very substance from which the fastner is made. Totally Stainless, Inc. offers a unique line of 'grade 8' (regular strength stainless steel fasteners are only slightly stronger than 'grade 2') strength stainless for high strength applications. Don't bolt your brake or suspension system together with regular strength stainless steel fastners. Do it right the first time.

But I have the regular bed. I don't think there is a difference in the bed bolts & nuts but to be safe I have to ask.

Will these secure a 8' bed on a 88 F-150?
