1 of the 3 bolts for my '40 Ford is shot- can't even make out a nut on the thing that used to be a bolt. Unfortunately, they are 'unobtanium' as far as I have found via searching today : 1.5-in long x 9/16-in carriage bolts. Need to be that size to index into the squared bumper holes.
Anybody have 3 laying around? Don't care about cosmetics, in fact would prefer some rust. I was going to settle on roughing up some galvanized bolts… then found out no one has 'em- galvanized OR plated, and so far; nothing online either.
I bet I do. I have been buying bumpers and hoods because mine were so bad that now they show up and I buy them. I have two horrible bumpers with good brackets and a beautiful bumper from the tinman truck with a broken bracket. I will scrounge up 3 bolts and report back tomorrow. Remind me of course.
Didn't get down to where I have an extra bumper today, but tomorrow I should be able to. Shouldn't be a problem to find 3 of them. I like a bit of rust on my bumper bolts too. Just not any perforating my body panels...l..
Sorry I haven't gotten to this yet. Some new stuff at work and getting a house ready for wife's son and family who are moving back to the island. I'm pretty sure I have 3 extra though. I will get to it over the weekend.
Found the bumper with the broken end. 3 bolts! One is longer than the others, maybe because of license plate bracket? It's on the passenger side. Sprayed them with pb blaster and I'll put some gentle heat to them today. Original black paint/rust patina! You'll have to pm me your address.
Well we have gone around a bit on this, but here are the three I have extra. One is a 1/2 " bolt, but I didn't notice at first because the nut takes a 7/8 wrench. My panel truck's rear bumper has a square head bolt on the left and a hex head in the center and right so I need to save some for me.
OK, my friend- thanks very much for checking.
On a similar note, I struck out with the small old-time tire shop/junkyard today; none of the 4 old timers in there offered up any hope. I'll keep searching.
I did find in my coffee can of carraige bolts, a 9/16 galvanized carraige bolt. Under the head it had a football shaped shoulder instead of square. I think it was from some junk I got from a lineman buddy who works for the local power company. I have burned off galvanizing before and re-shaping into a square should be easy. I will ask Dan when I see him if it's something they use.
Either would work well. They will probably be cad plated so heat them with a torch until cherry red and the cadmium burns off and we toss them in water. Nice and dull gray/black color. Then buff to suit.
Picked up [3] 1/2-in carriage bolts instead. The shoulder is right about a 32nd-in less than 9/16, so it won't turn in the bumper. They're 2" long instead of 1.5", but that's OK. Need to file the code letters off the head, along with the plating, and yes; toss 'em in water.
Have 3 sitting here on the table ( w/ nuts ). All have been media blasted primed & painted black . They have been a paper weight for 3 yrs. Send me a PM & I will send some pics to you .These are originals. Email is koda06@bellsouth.net
