I am wondering if I am the only one with these problems. I recently purchased a 1998 ranger XLT 4X4 off road supercab. I love the truck ,but hate the quirks. It currently has 53K on it and is developing some rather odd drivetrain and engine noises. I had the clunk in the drive train that I have read about here. Installed a the new updated aluminum drive line and that went away, for now. I have an odd hoot or chirp sound from the clutch when I start out. The dealer went with me for a ride verified the noise and told me that is normal. He explained to me that the materials that the plates are made harder and can glaze over causing this. He told me that other than the noise it is harmless, sounds fishy to me. The one that really bothers me is this rattle, especially at idle, from the crankcase area. Sounds like loose nuts in the pan. The dealer did a decarb. and it seemed to be better but only for about 500miles and now it is back. I can't afford to decarb. every 500, I ran low octane union 76 like he recommended, an ideas thanks
Try doing a search for a TSB on the clutch issue, see the menu to the right, I think I recall one about this topic. If you find one let me know, I should have the complete TSB and can email it to you.
The engine issue is very common with the 4.0, there is a link about this in the tech info post but I don't think there is a long term cure.
Thanks for the tips everyone. That thread on 4.0L "marbling" noise that Rockledge sent me fit my problem to a T. I didn't hear the noise until after my first oil change as the new owner 49K. And I went to Quakerstate full synthetic 10/30 and that noise was there on startup. I couldn't believe it, I drained that out and went back to dead dino 5/30 and it was still there. So now I am going back to the syn. and I am going to try the PAWpaw oil change method, can't hurt. Thanks again everyone.
