93 4.0L light knocking sound

My 93 Extended XLT with 132K miles has developed a light knocking sound (as opposed to a loud knock or tick). It is only noticable under a load and it seems to get less noticable (but still present) as the vehicle warms up. If I slip the trans into neutral while driving and rev the engine it sounds fine. I noticed a few threads suggested u-joints or motor/trans mounts ( I have not check those yet). Has anyone else experienced this or have any other suggestions? I haven't done the seafoam/decarb thing but did have a motorvac done 30K ago. Thanks!

welcome pesobill,

symtoms indicate preignition knock from carbon buildup in combustion chamber which is common in 4L's....
use Berryman's B12=lower cost and more active ingredients or the old standby Seafoam
whole can thru 1/8" tube into front of throttle body at 2k rpm into hot engine with black air tube off...let set 1>2 hours and take out on freeway with several wide open throttle hard runs, 10>20 miles....
park and disconnect neg. batt. lead for 5 minutes to clear KAM in PCU of old carboned engine incorrect performance parameters....run for 200>300 miles and read codes....Autozone and other auto parts retailers will read codes for free....
please post any codes here

what octane fuel are you using?...any higher than 87 pump octane will cause extra carbon buildup in 4L OHV

Thanks - I will try this process and hope for the best.

I have been using 89+ octane fuel as this seems to eliminate pinging. I also cleaned the MAF sensor so I figured both items are working together to eliminate pinging.

peso,
Ford has a TSB out on the 4L carbon buildup problem....Ford Tech. Dept. states do NOT use any higher than 87 octane fuel or there will be extra carbon deposits due to a colder combustion...Ford even contracts out for and sells their version of B12 and Seafoam in a pretty Ford Blue can for $15

quart of water by same technique also cleans carbon from combustion chamber but has none of the other benefits such as cleaning the TB, intake valve tulips and ring packs on the pistons....

how ya like the Washington typhoons?

Pablo, I think you need to decarbon too. Sometimes it won't do it warmed up because the computer may change its operateing parameters at temperature. I just got a 4.0L, and unfortunately it is difficult for me to find 87 octane because 85 octane is our lowgrade, so 88 is often midgrade. I can mix gas however. I also use Seafoam in the gas tank about once every 20 fillups. Makes it guzzle the gas for that one tank howev er, but performance is restored following the cleanout. My truck started getting poor economy and poor performance, bt wasn't knocking. I ran some seafoam through it and performance was greatly improved.

My perfomance is good (I have 3.0 with Pistons of MB.... so I have 3.4.... )... But compression ratio is 1.4.... No pinging.... but this sound...

Hey 96_4wdr

I have got the gutters cleaned out now so bring on the next typhoon wave.
I love the Pacific NW rain!

So I guess the general concensus is that my particular knock has to be engine related and most likely is not loose mounts, u-joints., etc, correct? I will also go back to lower octane fuel - besides, it's cheaper. Hope the ping doesn't return.

4.0L carbon knock is so common on high mileage engines that it's the place to start and needs to be done as part of regular maintenance....
preignition knock is also damaging to engine....especially the 4.0L thin cast weak heads
preign. knock also decreases fuel mileage
lots of reasons to add it to every 30k mile maintenance list

now we know what PabloUA's knocking problem is

those cheap Mercedes pistons in a high class American iron Ford 3.0L OHV pushed to the max to 3.4L, 20:1 compression ratio and running pure nitro methane.....and he octane doses the fuel with some of that potato squeezings 200 proof Ukrainiane Khortytsa Vodka

Pablo, you have never told us how fast that DragAero is?
1/2km? 1km?

3 times I had competitions....

2 times with MB Vito, 1 time with Voyager.... I wan 3 times.... There no DragVans of this class here... But, clutch dies in 2 races, tranny leaks, tires birn, u-joint nocks like a hell after these races.... The lust time I had a bet with driver of Mazda 6 2.0 DOHC.... I won this race, got $300, but tranny started nocking loudly. So I got used tranny for $120, replaced clutch....

I have an *.amr file of my tranny death song.... a bit later I'll post the file...

96_4 WDR! Do you like Khortytsa Vodka? This is my favorite vodka. My father delivered a bag of juniper and now he makes gin on base of Khortytsa vodka.... We drink mix of gin and tonic 2-3 times a week....

Sounds like YOU might have a light knocking sound after all that vodka. Is it less than 87 octane?
