Question Best Oil Filter?

Guys,

I have been reading that Fram filters are junk, they collaspe, cause lower than normal pressure readings.. etc.

Lets hear it on other types or what not... I heard that WIX filters are good. Also Puralator and Napa Gold line.

Unfortunately I have always used Frams.. but I won't be anymore... nope...

Who actually makes the Napa Filters?

Thanks!

NAPA gold is the same as wix. The silver is made by wix also, but it is debatable whether it is the same thing. I know the silver looks the same in and out. The paper media may be different though. Wix is a good heavy duty filter. At work we use them in everything, excavators, dump trucks to pickups. They make good aftermarket filters for everything.

After doing a study for 3 months on filtration and filters. I wouldn't use Fram, Purolator, STP or any other brand built using the same technology. If you want proof, purchase a Fram filter, cut it open... Here what you get, Poor quality, paper ends glued to a lower quality paper filter material. String, yes string tied around the paper to hold it, I assume while the glue dries. I wouldn't trust any of these to protect my engine.

Motorcraft, AC and the other manufacturers are in the middle but not the quality of filter I want protecting my investment

I will not use anything but Baldwin brand filters, harder to locate usually sold by industrial and heavy equipment suppliers. Extremely high quality in material and workmanship. If these are not available, Fleetguard and Wix also have very high quality.

As the old saying goes...You get what you pay for! Baldwin, Fleetguard and Wix are higher than the mainstream.

Also the matter of which end of the can has the bypass valve. Motorcraft is in the threaded end (FL1A), but the Purolator equivalent is in the bottom of the can. The longer Purolator (x ref to FL299) has the valve in the threaded end though.

Check out the oil filter study on this web page. This guy has done extensive research on oil filters. Based on his information, I've concluded that the Motorcraft is this best filter for my needs. It is as good or better than most and is cheap.

His study allows you to come to your own conclusion. It certainly points out which ones are not good ie. Fram, Penzoil & Quaker State. Based on his study I am comfortable with the Motorcraft for $3.

One contributor mentioned the filter for the F-150 from Canton Racing Products. The filter is advertised to work down to 8 microns, about half of what the better "Throw-away" filters advertise. It's very expensive, and uses replacement elements, good for 10,000 "street" miles, fewer miles for racing. It's a "billet" aluminum spin on, re-useable, of course, with the replacement elements, adv. good for the "life" of the truck. I took the plunge because of the 8 micron filtering. It arrived, looks well made. I will have to order replacement gaskets and O-rings, when the originals wear out. Is it worth the expense to get the 8 micron filtering?

i think k and n oil filters are overpriced. I use only wix, hastings, or motorcraft on my vehicals. used to use fram, a 1,300 dollar mistake.
