i want to regear my truck this spring right now it has the stock 4:10's in it...Its a 95 250.someone told me i should go with 4:88 AT least or ill get stuck in the mudd.im not sure if that would but ok but i do drive on the highway and im not sure how fast i could go with 4:88s?..also my truck is automatic.how hard is it to regear?anyone?
theres alot of information missing here. what engine do you have, 4x4? what size tires. but basically, with the 4.10s i would assume that you are fine. i have a friend that has 37s on his truck with stock 3.55 gears, and i havent seen him stuck yet.
well...a set of gears in mud can help....for example if you try and turn 44's on 2.80 gears (extreme example) you won't be able to spin them fast enough to clean the lugs... But your all right. Theres some info missing.
sorry i have a 351w as far as tranny i dont know how do i find out?..in the spring im going with 39" or 40" tires not sure what ones yet.its the heavy duty f 250.but i think i may go with 40" ground hawgs.
Typical rule of thumb for off roading and gears/tires: 33's with 4.10's, 35's with 4.56's, 38's with 4.88's, 40 or bigger 5.13's.
I have 33's with 4.56's and I did that because my truck is heavy (over 6000 lbs empty), my engine is small (351), I live in an area where there are hills, and I like to haul a camper and a trailer. I get descent pulling power now that I was seriously lacking with 3.55's. Even with the truck empty, it was a dog going uphill or pulling from a stop.
The trade off was slower speeds on the freeway and lower gas mileage on the freeway, as I don't have overdrive. If I had overdrive, this combination would be perfect for me and I would be able to cruise with the flow of traffic on the freeway, even here in crazy California.
You have a descently heavy truck and are planning on putting on some sizeable tires there. Since you are obviously planning to do some serious 'wheeling with the truck, I would think you would want to gear it so you have plenty of low speed power for climbing and mudding. I don't know how much freeway cruising you plan to do or if you have another vehicle to use as your transpo car, but it seems to me that 4.88's or 5.13's would be a good choice for your combination.
