differential gears

alright, im planning my next step with the truck. planning on a regear and dont know if i should go with 4.88s or 5.13s? im running 36x14.50 tsl's and gonna have a mild 390. i'm also going to be buying detroits with the gear change. im thinking the 4.88s will be good for this tire setup, but i'm kind of considering going with the 5.13s

Well most people i know run between a 4:10/4:56 for 33-35 tires. But i would think a 4.88 would be ok for a 36-37. It just depends on if you are driving this on the street alot, size of axels, size of motor, and future plans and upgrades.

i had 4:56 and 36's on my last rig, and it was as close to as perfect as ya can get.

between the two mentioned, git the 4:88's
i dont think you will get what you want out of 5:13 ratio.

if yer not ever gunna go bigger on sneakers, i would reconsider 4:56 for highway purposes alone...

I'm running 38.5's with 4.88's. This does good both on and off road. If you run only off road you could go lower for power and climbing.

I'd use either 4.56s or 4.88 gears.

If you want something lower than that, then put it in 4 Lo.
Sometimes you'll want wheel speed, and you won't get that with 5.13s.

Unless your going to be on rocks, don't worry about the 5.13s.

I have a stock 400 and 36.8" tires and 4.56 gears and I'm happy with them.
Night and day difference over stock

With the 390, the best (manual) tranny ratio will be 1:1.

I would buy the wheels and tires, put them on the truck, drive it for 500-1000 miles to break them in. Then measure the rear tire diameter and gear the rear end so I got 2100 rpms (whatever you want) at 55 mph.
