I was thinking of something similar, only using electrical tape, I just don't know how long that would hold up. I was just concerned that the molding did more than just cover the white paint. I guess I could bite the bullet and get the new molding strips but I will wait to see what some of your solutions look like first. Dan
Maybe you guys misunderstood me. I'm not talking about spraying it with spray paint! You will need to use a body shop quality paint. I used Black semi gloss paint like found on bumpers and trim. This is not an easy fix. The surface needs to be sanded, prepped with solvent to remove all wax or oil, then it needs to be primed and then sanded again. Then it can be sprayed. You will need to remove your molding and trim pieces from around the doors and paint all of the pillar. This looks completely factory when completed. Best of all.... that POS molding isn't rubbing a hole in the sheetmetal of your truck. The way I see it is as follows.... You can leave it there and wait for it to start rusting, or you can remove it and leave the body color showing through, or you can replace it and spend $160+ for new trim, or you can do a quality paint job in between the doors and leave the moldings off. It's up to you.... I personally think that the later of the choices is the best option.... no chance of rust from POS moldings and it still looks factory!Just my .02.
I can't believe that this is that big of a deal. Mine is bent. I just went out and looked at it with the doors closed. I can see the color of the truck and it looks fine. I guess I am just not as fussy as many of you. I will just take it off and leave it like it is since it has not rubbed off any paint yet.
Got the same problem on the drivers side only. The passenger side is fine. Thing rubs paint off in some parts and makes an annoying noise when the door is opended. Tried to tape it for a while, but no good.
Dealer said replacement is $56. The moulding is part of the outside black trim running down the window. If you caregully pull back the window weatherstrip with the window rolled down, there are three connecting points. They look to be rivets or some kind of special tool. I'm not sure if they will thread out or not. Does anyone know how this is connected? Maybe a guy could find one in a junk yard. Not sure if a replacement wouldn't go back the same way in time.
The trim peices are riveted into place. They would need to be drilled out and then reinstalled with sheetmetal screws. All of the other black trim on the expy is held on the same way also.
I am new here and I have a 2000 that seems to me making a lot of noize at highway speeds and I was blaiming this piece of molding. Looks like I need to revaluate the cause and I was considering removing it on mine as well.
