Paris Dakar Rally

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-12-03 AT 10:33 PM (EST)]I've been watching the Dakar on Speed and have to say it is really scratching an itch of mine. I want MORE!!! I have always been intrigued by the Dakar and have wondered what it would take to do it.

:-X23 As I watch it, I keep asking myself: Could I do this? As I approach 40 years of age, I think: "That has got to hurt." Days and days of racing across the sand. To do it on a bike would be superhuman. A 4 wheeled vehicle is still tough. And then there are the BIG trucks. I think that would be a hoot driving one at a 100 mph across the sand until I rolled it or got it stuck. Digging it out would really eat my lunch.

They showed one of the female drivers (who was riding a bike! Tough girl!) who was fighting the sand and dumped it right in front of the camera. She got up and the frustration was obivous as she said: "How can you stand there and just watch me???"

To dream and do the Dakar! Would you?

I think it would be awesome. I always watch it. As much as I can.

Those are actually based on work trucks in Europe, Japan, and Russia. They are heavily modified of course and I tried to find some more info about them on the net and got a big zero. I guess I didn't phrased the topic right

I do know that the Russian trucks are a mid engine design and they have to change the location of the engine for the Dakar.

That top pic is of a Hino truck, which they do import over here. It is kinda like the little Isuzu cab-over city truck, but I have seen water tankers that looked like that. I would wait until Jeep put the 5-cyl diesel into the Liberty, and build one of those. Drop the compression a little, run the boost up to about 45 psi, re-time it- oh yeah!

I wonder how long an American monster truck like Bigfoot would last in that race.

The rally started as a motorcycle race 25 years ago. The well funded teams had support trucks and one thing led to another and pretty soon they were racing the support trucks.

Dan,
I'm with ya on the Dakar. Very cool. I ask myself at this age (35) what have you done that's daring, risky, exhilirating, etc?

Getting ahead with 12 items in the 10 items or less line just doesn't cut it anymore!

However, If it's all the same with you I'd rather do the "Camel Trophy" deal they had going awhile back. Do they still have that? I quit taking "Four wheeler" magazine years ago.

Super-exotic locations, complex terrain issues, survival, AND mechanical prowess combined. Way cool.

Just think-- with your logic, your brains, your mechanical prowess, your common sense, your sense of navigation (pilot) and my.....ok, labor,

We'd be unbeatable!!!!

<laughs at himself>

I'd like to do the Top Truck Challenge. Actually planning on a 2004 truck, if things work out that way. Thinking a Ford 401 turbo-diesel, with the Clark 5-speed, custom independant front and rear, not sure about the t-case though. With the right gearing, might make for a good Dakar truck too. Also, as far as monster trucks go, it would make it about the first 1/4 mile, then run out of gas, blow the motor, etc. These things, as far as racing goes, are slow, heavy, and thirsty.
