I have a '99 F-250, Extended Cab Long box, V-10. it has the snowplow package, type X front springs. Currently has wore out 265/75/16 stock tires. I'm looking at getting 285/75/16 BFGs, on the stock aluminum rims. Has anyone had any complaints on going to that size? I wanted to ask before I fork over the cash and buy them and find out people are having issues running them. Let me know your thoughts, thanks in advance!
285's are taller tires which means your cumputer will have to be re-programmed for that tire size. Speedo will be off along with the mileage. Larger tire means , speed is faster than shown and more mileage than it shows. Hope this helps.
I just put 285's on about a month ago. I like how they ride and improve the handling of the truck. I got my speedo recalibrated...it cost me about $70. Also since the truck is riding about 2" taller....my headlights needed to be reaimed....all included in that minimum labor charge at the dealer....$70
i have had 285's on my truck for over a year, no problems. i have even run them with chains on all four tires no rubbing at all. i can also tell you that if you by 5 the spare will fit under the bed in the stock location. on the stock rim
There is a 4% difference in tire sizes. If you guys really want to spend the money to have your speedo's recalibrated for 4%, go ahead, but I think it is a big waste of cash. The factory setting isn't even close to correct anyway. Lots of guys run 35-38's with out recalibrating.
If the tires are a little over 1 inch different from each other, the truck will only sit 1/2 that distance higher with the 285's on it. I really don't know why your headlights would need re aimed for a 1/2" difference in ride height. Where did the 2" come from?

Munkey was that a key slip or did you mean the 295 that you posted? My speedo was off with the stock 265's but spot on with the 285/75's using GPS. I should have checked when I was running the 305/70's, but I think the Baja Claws run short as when I put them next to my BFG MT 285/75's they look to be about the same size.
My 295's fit perfectly in the wheelwells, no rubbing at full droop, or full stuffing of the tire while off-roading. (click this LINK to see how close they come.) I'm running them on the stock "D" hole rims (not the aluminium. . .aluminum, whatever). I chose the 295's over the 285/75, and 305/70 because they are the tallest of the "33 inch" bunch (285/75 & 305/70 coming in at 32.8", while the 295/75 run at 33.4"). I did have some issues with the tires being out of round, which were fixed and now they ride smooth as glass, but no problems with clearance what-so-ever! I don't have any good pics to show how they look on a stock truck, but post (or e-mail me) and I'll snap some tomorrow.
Ronin007, I'm not sure what you mean? With the GPS and my stock 265's, my speedo was off (about 2 - 3 mph fast IIRC), and now, my 295's are totally accurate with my GPS.
ON EDIT: BTW, I'm running a totally stock truck suspension wise, no leveling or lift kit (yet!), and I don't have the Heavy Duty Suspension or the Plow Package, just stock!
From: I'm lost somewhere in NJ -- can someone please find me?!?!?!?
285/75 R16's Michelin LTX M/S on stock rims here.
about 15,000 miles on them since I replaced the stock 265's.
No problems -- great ride, and the bigger tires look great, too.
I check my mileage on the interstate against the mile markers. I calculate a 3.75% margin of error in my case -- not worth the reprogram, as far as I'm concerned.
The only disadvantages to the bigger tires, in my case, are:
The bed is about 3/4" higher now, so I have to reach a little more
MPG's went down slightly with the larger tire -- about 0.75 MPG lower now.
Thanks Munkey. Thats what I needed to Know. I think I may put the AAL from Jackit on just to level the truck's stance and go ahead with the 295/75-16 BFG AT's and be done with it.
I have been researching and pondering this for about 3 weeks now and I have a headache !
No problems with the 285s here. Like others, my speedo was off with the 265s and is now almost dead on (both speedo and odometer). The truck seems to drive better as well.
It's hard to compare before and after gas mileage since there was a change in the speedo/odo readings, but I have a couple of routes that I routinely travel and it is taking less gas to make the loop than before. YMMV.
