Spring chores around the home invariably involve something that needs painted. I find I have (almost) infinite patience with mechanical repair but very little patience when it come to house painting - I just want to be done and the sooner the better. Painting some screens last night made me wonder if this is a common personality trait among the mechanically inclined?
Don't think so. At least not in my case. I have been doing my own mechanical work for many years, and also consider myself a better than average painter. I've owned an old frame house for 27 years, and have painted the trim many times. Can't say I like doing it, though. Would rather work on the trucks.

I once painted one of my engines with a brush. It actually came out quite good and I enjoyed doing it. Now as far as painting the house, I hate it at first but after a while it seems to grow on you, especially when you get into the groove of it. It’s kind of therapeutic as the mind begins to wander (that must be when the fumes start taking over.)
I think it's a matter of artistic talent. I do all my automotive work, except for tire mounting/balancing and body work. I enjoy it except for the dirt and grime. I also enjoy building structures like workshops, fences, etc. But I hate painting worse, before plumbing second. I would like to do finish carpentry and painting, but am 'artistically challenged' in that area, as well as anything that takes extremely fine soft-touch techniques. (I do play the guitar some though).
So, I think the fact that I can't paint without getting painted, and leaving paint where isn't supposed to be is why I hate it. Anybody want to trade some talents? I need my house painted.
I don't like doing auto painting mainly because I can't get it PERFECT. I'm much better at house painting. I'd like to learn how to do automotive painting better, but it kind of scares me. I know body guys who've only been in the field for a few years, and already the fumes and everything are getting to them. When I painted the floor of the auto parts store I used to work in, it really messed me up one day, I about passed out kneeling only floor doing trim work.

I hate plumbing more than I can say here (without having to do a lot of editing) painting second. But, I do them both because I hate to spend money on something I can do myself (aka I am cheap) The groove that you are speaking of is when you start thinking about your truck or whatever in the world other than what your doing. For my peacful getaway I'll go out to the garage and close the door. No plumbing and as soon as I get done painting the inside I wont have to do it for several years.
i don't mind painting. i've done fences, trims, planters, walls, everything. i just blast a stereo with some good tunes (that i like, dimmu borgir, power symphony, Emperor, Oldmans child) and i'll do w/e! i won't care
I use to hate house painting also, then I bought one of those Wagner power painters. Now I can paint my house (20'x30'x75') in about 4 hours. It takes longer to tape and paint the trim then the frame now.
My Hubby liked painting so much, he had our entire house stucco'd in a brick look. Only thing left on the house that needs painting are the eve's. He can spend hours and days rebuilding a motor, fabricating parts, tinkering in the shop but has no patience for painting of any kind.
Painting is a funny thing, and most people HATE it.
I love hearing this because it's been my living for 20 years.
Of course I don't mind doing it at all because it has provided me with a home, several cars, and even a few racing seasons!
The trick is to try to take your mind off of what you are doing and kind of zone out. (If useing oil base paint you will zone out anyway.)
I also love working on cars. I even own an old brittish spitfire just to have something to tinker with.
But what I really HATE is plumbing! Not the pressure side but the drains! This should be the easyist part of it IMO, but when I do it, it NEVER fails to leak at least the first couple of times I put it together.
I got that bad drain mojo.
