I have a 1996 explorer.I have a loud whining noise coming from the rear diff.I brought the vehicle to my mechanic and he says its the rear pinion .The price to have it fixed he says is arround $600-$800.
Is this a job that I could do.I have an ok ability for working on automobiles.I'm also wondering if I just drive it what would happen.
$600 is really to expensive for us right now. Thanks Mike
Mike,
It's more than you want to tackle. You have to set clearances on both the ring and the pinion gears. That is a pain in the you know what.
You keep driving it and your going to launch something sooner or later.
Have you checked the fluid level in the diff? Is the axle seals leaking? Is the front pinion seal leaking? Last but not least, can you feel any play in the yoke?
thanks for the help.None of the seals are leaking, and the fluid level was fine.Your right thats too complicated for me .We'll just sell some of the kids furniture and cut them back to 0ne meal a day to get the money for the repair.ha ha ha.thanks again Mike
