This is confusing me alot. I bought a new ring and pinion to put in a new carrier I bought for my truck. I guy I know put the gear set in and he says he did set the pinion depth right. But now after about a day the nut for the yoke keeps backing off. I tighten it and a day later it's backed of again to where the yoke spins on the pinion. If anyone can help that'd be great. If nothing else I'll just get a new carrier with the right gear set in it. Thanks.
Aaron,
Setting the pinion depth correctly is one of the more difficult task to perform. Does the pinion flange move in and out of the front carrier after you tighten it? If so, you haven't got it tight enough. If it is tight, then the crushable spacer has been over crushed and needs to be replaced. Meanwhile it's possible you've stripped the spline on the pinion output shaft. Are there any metal shavings? If so, you know the answer to your problem.
