Wiring harness MAYHEM

Im trying to swap an 88 351w to a 95 460. The truck is an 88 and has wires to an 88. Should I get a 460 computer for an 88 and wiring harness for a 460 88? Or is the whole thing different from a 351 to 460?

Has anyone ever done a project like this? MAn I got everything in place except my wires and computer WHOA

You're putting the later year 460 into the older truck if I understand you correctly.

If thats the case, the least aggrevating way of doing this is to find the ECM and wiring harness from a 88 to 93 f-series truck that had the 460, and install.

If the 95 460 was truly complete, meaning it had all the accessories and emissions stuff attached to it, then you should probably get the 95-97 460 EFI harness and computer, so all the emissions stuff works.

Before you say "I don't need it" do know that the 95 and up pickups had ODB-II, which does require more wiring in a swap situation, but its an excellent diagnostic tool should you have problems down the road. You get more data/codes out of the ODBII system than you would with the 93 and back system.

BTW, if your having problems finding a f-series ECM you could use a e-series (van) ECM and wiring harness, though be careful with the van harness, the ECM wires might not quite reach the firewall depending on the van.

I have one question I really need answered.

Can I take an 88 460 computer and put it in a truck that HAD a 351w computer, and also use the engine wiring harness from a 460 truck? As long as they are both the same year, can I do this?

Maybe.

You'd need the engine bay wiring diagrams from the 351W and the 460 trucks of the same year. If they match, then yes you can use the harness.

If they don't match, you might be able to just move a few pins around in the ECM connector and call it a day.

But you need the wiring diagrams. Unfortunately, my book doesn't go back to 88, I only have the 92 through 96 diagrams.

The 92 through 96 trucks have different ECM pinouts year to year as well as for different engine sizes, so a "completely wild guess" would be no.

ya I tried using a harness from a 92 but that didnt work. Does anyone know if an 88 460 harness will work on an 88 351 truck with a 460?

If you get an 88-91 460 harness and the same year 460 ECM, it will work.

Yes, that will work fine. Be aware that '87 and '88 are the only years where the engine wiring harness is not integrated into the rest of the underhood harness. If you can find an '88 harness for a 460, you should be good to go, although I would check the wiring harness where it connects to the chassis wiring to be sure the pin functions are the same. They should be the same.
