that may not happen,i've read that ford and IH are not happy with each other over the injector issues on the 6.0 liter.but we can always hope, right!? i dont know why they dont just put a I-4 turbo in the half tons most of the major engine engine makers have very reliable and stout inline fours already in use in ag and constrution equipment.they would put out enough HP and TORQUE for a half ton.
i was at the work truck show in baltimore this past week where i was hoping to learn some info on the 05 superduties, but they didn't have anything...well at the international display they had the new truck that is pretty much like the european, japanese delivery trucks with the flat fronts where the cab flips forward (low cab forwards-lcf)...the international guy told me that it is going to be built by international at their plant in mexico and fords version would just have there logo on it...i have the engine spec/literature/brochure of the engine
A motor like that one would be a good candidate for 1/2 tons, the power seems like it would be pretty close to what one would need, maybe sacrife some torque for a bit more hp though.
I would agree with you put a diesel in a half ton truck, ford would be the first and would increase sales, also the diesels would be getting better fuel milage while producing more torque and horsepower than the gas engine, i would go with a staight 6 instead of the 4,
I am quite sure the reason Ford didn't go I6 or something like a 3.5-3.9L TD I4 was because it cost a LOT less to just chop 2 holes off the 6.0L and make a light duty version from that.
Ford is not happy with International, but Int. is going to make tweaks to the engine anyway and hope that Ford takes a liking to it despite what has gone on already. Waaaaaay too much money put into the engine R&D to just dump it in the trash right now.
I never even considered the SUV applications for a smaller PSD motor, but it makes quite a lot of sense. I'm sure a lot of Expedition owners would rather go for a diesel given the amount of towing that a lot of them do. It would also help Ford win some good PR by offering a more fuel efficient alternative in their most inefficient vehicles. Who knows, a V6 PSD might even be compact enough to fit in the Explorer?
Detroit Diesel does have one, and if you know anything about that, it will likely have a turbo and a supercharger. DD is surprising the hell out of me. Truly a pioneer of a company, and made in the US. I sure hope Ford and DD can work something out, DD said they could put out for an 06 model year truck. I just hope its light enough. Thats been the plague of diesels for years. Just because a motor is a I6 does not make it lighter, the 6BT Cummins weighs 200#s more than the VT365.
I do not know if Detroit would make a deal with Ford, considering that Detroit is owned by Chrysler. There is a 3.9L 4 cylinder Cummins, which is basically a 5.9L with two less cylinders and Dodge has not used it as of yet. That could be a possibility in the future.
It's all about balancing, Steve. 90 degrees for a v-8. 60 degrees for a v-6. There are 90 degree gas v-6's that work just fine. I just don't think it's a good idea with a high compression diesel.
