Compass "-- --"

It no longer reads N, S, etc. I tried to manually reset it per the manual - holding it for 6 seconds, etc. but it does not respond.
I called service and the service guy had "no idea" what could be causing that and he stated he would have to look at it. If there is a quick fix out there I would like to apply it and save a trip to the dealership, otherwise they will see me on Monday or Tuesday of next week.
Thanks in advance.
Then....you probably need to calibrate the compass. Press and hold the reset button down for 8 seconds. The display will show "CAL". Drive the vehicles at less than 3 mph in circles (free from power lines and steel structures up to 5 circles) until the "CAL" indicator turns off. No, the driving in circles is not a joke.
First, you have to set your "zone". In CO, you're either in zone 5 or 6. Start the engine. Press the reset button for 6 seconds and release. "ZONE" should appear. Press and release the button until the correct zone number comes up. Hold the botton down to lock in the zone.
